In the Summer of 1999, while working as a security guard at a construction site, I made an unexpected discovery during one of my nightly foot patrols:
As I examined one particular headstone, reading the name and dates inscribed upon it, I noticed movement from a nearby tree. When I looked up, I was astonished to see a young girl wearing
an old cemetery situated just beyond the property.
It was no longer in active use; in fact, I later learned that the most recent burial had taken place in 1987. Several of the gravestones dated back as far as 1875.
Intrigued, I returned to the cemetery during the day to better understand its size and condition. Many of the older graves showed significant settling, with depressions in the earth
where the coffins had likely deteriorated over time, allowing the soil to collapse inward.
a white bonnet and a blue dress, watching me timidly from behind the trunk. The moment our eyes met, she vanished. A wave of goose bumps swept over me.
I walked to the area where I had seen her and searched the surrounding graves. There I found the resting place of a little girl, approximately 7 to 9 years old at the time of her death.
Although I can no longer recall her name, I later returned and placed flowers on her graveāan offering to acknowledge her presence and to ensure she was not forgotten.
